Opera Australia announced its 2027 season on 12 August 2026, and single tickets went on sale on 29 September. The Sydney half splits into a summer season from January to March and a winter season from July to August, with Les Misérables taking the theatre after that.
Below are the run dates as published on opera.org.au and sydneyoperahouse.com, the from-prices we could confirm, and our pick for a first night at the opera.
The quick answer
Summer 2027 in the Joan Sutherland Theatre: La Bohème (2 January to 17 March), The Magic Flute (13 January to 23 March), The Elixir of Love (29 January to 12 March), a one-night French double bill (5 February) and Eucalyptus (22 to 25 March). Aida on Sydney Harbour runs 27 March to 25 April. Winter brings The Pirates of Penzance, Faust and A Masked Ball, then Les Misérables from 27 August. Most operas start from $79 plus a $9.80 fee.
Has Opera Australia announced its 2027 Sydney season?
Yes. The season launched on 12 August 2026. Subscriptions are on sale now, and single tickets went on general sale on 29 September 2026.
The season launch release lists every production, and the Opera House's 2027 season page carries the same dates. All of the Sydney mainstage titles play the Joan Sutherland Theatre, the 1,507-seat hall under the smaller set of sails.
Subscribers book two or more shows and save 10% on two, 15% on three or four and 20% on five or more, with free exchanges, says the Sydney package guide.

What is on at the Joan Sutherland Theatre from January to March 2027?
Three full operas in rotation, La Bohème, The Magic Flute and The Elixir of Love, plus Great Opera Hits, a one-night double bill and a short run of Eucalyptus.
La Bohème is the headline: Constantine Costi's new production, set in a wintry Paris, about 2 hours 15 minutes with one interval, in Italian with English and Simplified Chinese surtitles, from $79. Andrea Battistoni conducts to 9 February, Matteo Dal Maso after that, and three sopranos share Mimì.
The Magic Flute is Sir Thomas Allen's Scottish Opera staging, sung in German with English dialogue, about 2 hours 50 minutes, from $79. The Elixir of Love brings back Simon Phillips' comedy set in the Australian outback in 1915, with Stacey Alleaume as Adina: about 2 hours 20 minutes, from $79.
The odd ones out: Poulenc and Ravel's double bill plays in concert on 5 February with Anna Caterina Antonacci, and Eucalyptus, Sir Jonathan Mills' opera of Murray Bail's novel, gets three nights from 22 March, sung in English.

Which 2027 opera should you book for a first night at the Opera House?
La Bohème. It is the shortest full opera of the summer, the music is famous, and the story is easy to follow.
Puccini packs young love, a Christmas Eve crowd scene and a death into about two hours, and you will know at least two tunes on the way out. The Elixir of Love is the pick if you want to laugh. The Magic Flute is the longest night and the most family-friendly, with spoken English between the arias.
Short on time or nervous about opera? Great Opera Hits is 90 minutes including a 20-minute interval, from $69, and has sunset shows on selected dates through 21 March. There is no compulsory dress code at Opera Australia; our dress code guide has the details.
| Show | Length | Language | From (AUD) | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Great Opera Hits | 1 h 30 min | Several, with surtitles | $69 + fee | Best taster |
| La Bohème | 2 h 15 min | Italian, surtitles | $79 + fee | Best first opera |
| The Elixir of Love | 2 h 20 min | Italian, surtitles | $79 + fee | Best for a laugh |
| Eucalyptus | 2 h 30 min | English, surtitles | $79 + fee | For the curious |
| The Magic Flute | 2 h 50 min | German, English dialogue | $79 + fee | Best with older kids |

Check dates for the official guided tourWhen is Aida on Sydney Harbour in 2027?
From 27 March to 25 April 2027, on the floating stage at the Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquaries Point. It is outdoors, not inside the Opera House.
Opera Australia's Sydney calendar lists Aida on Sydney Harbour for that window. The site faces the House across Farm Cove, through the Royal Botanic Garden, with the sails and the bridge behind the stage. It is a big outdoor night and a good pairing with a daytime tour.
Don't confuse the two. A ticket to Aida does not get you into any hall in the Opera House.

What is on in winter 2027, and when does Les Misérables open?
The Pirates of Penzance, Faust and A Masked Ball run from July to early August. Les Misérables opens in the Joan Sutherland Theatre on 27 August 2027.
Winter is darker, in the best way. Gounod's Faust returns in Sir David McVicar's staging, sung in French, from 10 July. Verdi's A Masked Ball gets its Sydney premiere from 23 July with Nicole Car as Amelia. The Pirates of Penzance, back after nearly two decades, is the light relief from 1 July.
Then comes the big one. Variety Australia reports Cameron Mackintosh's Les Misérables will play the Joan Sutherland Theatre for the first time, with Opera Australia, from 27 August; the Opera House lists the run to 10 October 2027. Single-ticket priority pre-sale starts on 27 October 2026 and general sale on 3 November 2026. Subscribers to two or more 2027 operas got in first.
How do you get cheaper 2027 opera tickets?
Enter the $20 ballot, ask for a $49 partial-view box seat, sign up for the free Under 35s scheme, or subscribe to two or more operas.
Opera Australia's special offers page lists $20 tickets by ballot through the Wakil Foundation Access Program, and balcony box seats with a limited view for $49 plus the $9.80 fee, booked by phone on 02 9318 8200. Concessions cover full Australian pensioners, full-time Australian students and children 16 and under, but not on Saturday nights. Groups of eight or more save up to 15%.
Our tip: the $49 boxes. You lose a slice of the stage and keep the sound, the room and the night. More ideas, including Sydney Symphony deals in the Concert Hall, are in our cheap tickets guide.

See the Joan Sutherland Theatre from the other side: the wings, the pit and breakfast in the Green Room at 7am.
