Summer at the Opera House

A new harbourside cafe, a bar halfway through a refit, nine Forecourt concerts and three operas opening in the Joan Sutherland Theatre. Here is what changed for the warm months.

Applejack Hospitality took over the Opera House's harbourside bars in 2025 and spent 2026 rebuilding them. The result for this summer is one brand-new venue, Winnie's, and one old favourite, Opera Bar, finishing its renovation.

This post covers what we could confirm as of 21 October 2026: the food and drink changes, Badu Gili, tour closures over Christmas and New Year, and what plays in the halls from December to March.

The quick answer

Winnie's opened in August 2026 on the Lower Concourse: 330 seats, 7am until late, no bookings. Opera Bar's inside dining is closed for a refit due to finish ahead of summer, and the outdoor tables stay open. Badu Gili: Story Keepers is listed nightly to 30 November. Tours and the Welcome Centre close on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. On stage: On the Steps concerts from 28 November, The Choir of Man from 11 December, and La Bohème from 2 January.

Is Opera Bar open this summer?

Yes, outside. The inside dining area is closed for renovation, and Applejack says Opera Bar will relaunch ahead of summer. No exact reopening date was published as of 21 October.

The plan, reported by Concrete Playground in March 2026: a new kitchen, an upgraded bar and more indoor seating, with an all-electric kitchen to match the Opera House's decarbonisation targets. The bar was scheduled to close over winter and relaunch "in time for summer 2026".

Right now Opera Bar's own site says it is "currently undergoing renovations as we prepare for a new era". Harbourside tables are open, you order at the Terrace Bar, from Winnie's or by QR code, and there are no bookings. For a sunset drink with the bridge in front of you, nothing has really changed. For a rainy evening, it has.

What is Winnie's, and what happened to House Canteen?

Winnie's is the new all-day venue beside Opera Bar, unveiled on 6 August 2026. It replaced House Canteen, which closed for a refit and rebrand in March 2026.

The official Winnie's page lists 330 seats on the Lower Concourse, open Monday to Sunday from 7am until late, walk-ins only. It is named after Winifred Atwell, the first woman to perform at the Opera House. Australasian Leisure Management credits the fit-out to Luchetti Krelle and the menu to Patrick Friesen and Daniel Cooper, built on NSW produce.

Time Out lists chicken and sweetcorn congee and pea and feta fritters at breakfast, then tuna tartare, potted blue swimmer crab and prawn pasta later on. It is the best early coffee on Bennelong Point now, and the obvious stop after the sunrise kayak or a 7am backstage tour.

When is Badu Gili on this summer?

Badu Gili: Story Keepers is listed nightly from sunset until 30 November 2026. It is free, lasts six minutes, and plays on the eastern Bennelong sails.

The current animation celebrates Gooniyandi artist Mervyn Street and Inuk artist Ningiukulu Teevee, says the Badu Gili page. The NSW Government listing runs it from 17 December 2025 to 30 November 2026, and warns that screening times shift with the seasons and with Forecourt events.

What comes after 30 November had not been announced as of 21 October. New chapters have recently premiered in mid December: Celestial on 15 December 2023 and Story Keepers on 17 December 2025. Last summer the City of Sydney listed screenings between 8:30pm and 10:30pm. Expect a similar late window in midsummer, when the sun sets after 8pm, and check the official page on the day.

Watch from the top of the Monumental Steps. During the On the Steps concerts in early December, the Forecourt is a ticketed gig, so arrive from the Broadwalk side.

Do Opera House tours run over Christmas and New Year?

Not on Christmas Day or New Year's Eve. The Welcome Centre, where tours start, closes on both days, and the Box Office closes on Christmas Day.

The official visitor map page gives the Welcome Centre hours as daily from 8:45am to 5pm, except Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Reseller calendars for the one-hour tour list the same closures. Tours can also be cancelled at short notice for rehearsals and events, so venue access is never guaranteed.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest of the year. Book early-morning slots one to two weeks ahead, and check the booking calendar for one-off closures before you build a day around a tour.

What is on in the halls this summer?

Forecourt concerts in early December, The Choir of Man in the Studio from 11 December, Hook's Neverland in the Concert Hall in January, and three operas in the Joan Sutherland Theatre.

The Opera House's On the Steps series opens the season on the Forecourt with Australian Crawl on 28 November, then Rise Against, James Blake, Wolf Alice and Spacey Jane. Inside, Cat Power plays The Greatest in full in the Concert Hall on 7 December. From 11 December the Studio becomes an English pub for The Choir of Man, running to 24 January.

Families: Hook's Neverland, a circus show with aerials and illusions, premieres in the Concert Hall from 9 to 17 January, suitable for all ages. Opera Australia's summer season takes the Joan Sutherland Theatre from 2 January. My Fair Lady closes on 31 October, so it is not a summer option. The full opera list is in our 2027 season post.

What is summer weather like at the Opera House?

Warm and humid. Average highs in December to February are 25 to 26°C, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with plenty of hotter days.

The Observatory Hill averages put summer lows around 18 to 19°C, which makes evenings on the Broadwalk easy. Midday on the Forecourt is another story: pale concrete, no shade, harbour glare. Go early or late.

The Monumental Steps are at their best at sunrise and sunset. Sunrise is the hour for the sunrise kayak from Kirribilli, which gives you the sails from the water before the ferries get busy. It never goes inside, so pair it with a tour later in the day. Inside the House it is air-conditioned and cool, so bring a layer for a show.
