Booking choice: The backstage tour, from $138 per person. Check dates Tour details
The backstage tour is the Opera House's early-bird option: 135 minutes on the official page, a 7am start, 12 people at most and nobody under 10. It goes in through the Stage Door under the Monumental Steps and finishes with breakfast in the Green Room, "the exclusive domain of our crew and performers", as the House puts it.
It costs about four times the standard tour. Here is what that buys, what it doesn't, and who should book the cheaper hour instead.
The quick answer
The backstage tour starts at 7am at the Stage Door (check in 6:45am), runs about 2 hours 15 minutes, takes up to 12 people aged 10 and over, and ends with breakfast in the Green Room. It costs $138 here; sellers list A$171 to A$199 in 2026. You see corridors, rehearsal spaces, the orchestra pit and props, but no particular stage is guaranteed. Book it if you love theatre and can face the alarm. Otherwise the one-hour tour from $35 is enough.

What does the Sydney Opera House backstage tour show?
The parts of a working theatre the audience never sees: backstage corridors, rehearsal spaces, the orchestra pit, props, and the Green Room for breakfast.
The official page lists the subjects as pulleys, props, sequins and sound-checks. Guides explain how a production comes together and how a World Heritage building copes with being a busy venue. One guest summed it up as "the intricacies of the theater and the various locations and challenges".
The House staged 1,832 performances in 2024-25, so the morning route follows the day's work. The next group may see a different mix of spaces than yours. That is part of the appeal: you see a theatre mid-job, not a museum.

What time does the backstage tour start?
7am, with check-in at the Stage Door at 6:45am. Some sellers say weekend groups check in at the Welcome Centre desk instead, so read your ticket.
A typical morning:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:45am | Check in at the Stage Door, under the Monumental Steps |
| 7:00am | The tour starts: corridors, rehearsal spaces, the pit |
| Last stop | Breakfast in the Green Room with your guide |
| About 9:15am | Finish, 135 minutes after the start |
The listing asks you to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Trains and ferries already run to Circular Quay at that hour, and the walk to the House takes six to ten minutes. Driving? The Wilson car park under the building, entered from 2 Macquarie Street, is open 24/7.
How much does the backstage tour cost?
$138 per person here. In Australian dollars, sellers list it between A$171 and A$199 in 2026, and the official site shows the live price when you pick a date.
Prices differ by seller and season. One Australian reseller had it at A$171, down from A$190; Time Out quoted A$175; an August 2026 visitor guide gave A$199. Breakfast is included in every version.
Against the standard tour at $35, you pay about $100 more for an extra 75 minutes, a group of 12 instead of up to 35, the Stage Door and a sit-down breakfast.

In through the Stage Door at 7am with at most 11 others, then breakfast in the Green Room. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Explore the backstage tour Tour detailsWhat do you get for breakfast in the Green Room?
A sit-down breakfast with your guide: barista coffee or tea, juice, a starter such as a croissant or granola, and a hot main such as smashed avo on toast or eggs.
Two resellers publish the menu and they differ slightly, so take this as typical: an arrival treat of croissant, granola or tapioca pudding, then smashed avo on toast, a croque monsieur croissant, eggs benedict, bacon and eggs or a healthy bowl. Mention dietary needs when you book.
The room matters as much as the food. The Green Room is where performers and crew wait between calls, and it's off limits to everyone else.
Who can do the backstage tour?
Anyone aged 10 or over who can manage more than 300 steps in flat, enclosed, rubber-soled shoes. It isn't suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.
- Age: 10 and up.
- Group: 12 people at most.
- Steps: over 300, with no lift.
- Shoes: flat, enclosed and rubber-soled. Leave the sandals at the hotel.
- Bags: large luggage and backpacks must be cloaked.
- Cameras: the listing puts cameras and video recording on its not-allowed list, so expect to keep the phone in your pocket for most of it.
- Language: English only.
Younger children and anyone who can't do stairs have options: the standard tour takes all ages (no strollers), and the House's step-free Mobility Access Tour skips the stairs.
Is the backstage tour worth it over the standard tour?
For theatre lovers, yes. For a first look at the building, no: the one-hour tour shows the public spaces for about a quarter of the price.
Side by side:
| Standard tour | Backstage tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Daily, set times | 7am, check-in 6:45am |
| Length | 1 hour | 135 minutes |
| From | $35 | $138 |
| Group | Up to 35 | Up to 12 |
| Ages | All, no strollers | 10 and over |
| You see | Foyers and the halls free that day | Corridors, rehearsal spaces, the pit, the Green Room |
| Food | No | Breakfast |
| Languages | English, French, German, Spanish; Mandarin separate | English |
Our take: if the alarm would ruin your day, skip it. If you've ever wondered where the chorus waits or how a set gets in, this is the only way to find out. Doing both tours is overkill unless the building itself is your thing.
Prefer a later start? The one-hour official tour shows the foyers and halls from $35.
Check dates for the official guided tourDo you see a stage on the backstage tour?
Often, but not guaranteed. Route and venue access vary on the day, because the theatres are working spaces with rehearsals and set changes.
The listing says it outright: "Tour route and venue access may vary at the time of your tour." A new production moving in can close a theatre for the day. The orchestra pit, the rehearsal spaces and the Green Room are what the official description promises, and those are the parts guests talk about afterwards.

What can you do after the backstage tour?
You're out at about 9:15am with the day ahead. Walk into the Royal Botanic Garden next door, then on to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the classic view back at the House.
The garden is free and opens at 7am. Later, come back after dark for Badu Gili on the sails, or cross Circular Quay to The Rocks and the Harbour Bridge. More ideas in our visit guide.
