Sydney Opera House · Stage Door, 7am

Backstage at 7am

A small group goes in through the Stage Door before the building opens, down the crew corridors to the rehearsal rooms, the orchestra pit and the wings. It ends with breakfast in the Green Room, the lounge kept for performers and crew, and it's the closest a visitor gets to the working side of the House.

VIP Backstage Tour and Breakfast

About this experience

The Sydney Opera House runs the Backstage Tour daily, and it starts early: resellers list a 7am start with check-in from 6:45am at the Stage Door, the entrance under the Monumental Steps that performers use. The House gives the run time as 135 minutes and GetYourGuide rounds it to 2.5 hours. Groups are small, around a dozen people at most, which is a world away from the standard tour.

The route goes where the public tour does not. You walk the backstage corridors to the rehearsal spaces, drop into the orchestra pit, and see the props, the stage machinery and the sound checks of whatever is on that week. Guests name their guides in the reviews, which tells you how much the storytelling counts. Then you sit down for breakfast in the Green Room, which the House calls "the exclusive domain of our crew and performers".

What to know before you pay. It's for ages 10 and up, it covers more than 300 steps, and it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Flat, enclosed shoes with rubber soles are required, and you will be turned away in sandals. The listing bans video and lists cameras as not allowed, so expect to keep the phone in your pocket in some areas. Like every tour here, the exact route depends on what is happening in the building that morning.

Tips before you book

  • Book one to two weeks ahead in summer. With around 12 places a morning, it sells out first.
  • Getting there at 6:45am: trains and ferries run to Circular Quay early, and the walk round to the Stage Door takes 6 to 10 minutes.
  • Wear closed, flat, rubber-soled shoes. This is enforced.
  • Skip a big breakfast at the hotel. The Green Room one is part of the tour.
  • Cloak large bags and backpacks; you can't take them backstage.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the Sydney Opera House backstage tour start?

At 7am, with check-in from 6:45am at the Stage Door under the Monumental Steps. It runs daily and lasts about 135 minutes.

What is the minimum age for the backstage tour?

10 years old. The House lists it as suitable for 10+, and the climbing involved (more than 300 steps) makes it hard going for younger children anyway.

What do you see on the backstage tour?

The backstage corridors, rehearsal spaces, the orchestra pit, props and stage machinery, then breakfast in the Green Room. The exact route depends on what is being rehearsed or built that morning.

Is the backstage tour better than the standard tour?

For theatre lovers, yes: a small group, the pit and the Green Room. For a first look at the halls and the Utzon story, the one-hour standard tour does the job for a quarter of the price. Our backstage tour guide compares them.
